Following on from the May Day Five I entered with friends Simon and Paul, the Birmingham University 5k was going to be entered by the three of us as a bit of a get-together after not being in touch over the summer period. Simon was keen to enter as part of a drive to get back on track with his fitness, Paul was going to enter just for the sake of it and to meet up, and I fancied entering it on the basis that I'd never done a 5k before, though annoyingly I knew I couldn't run it as a race because I had entered the Lady Godiva Half Marathon the following weekend which I'd trained hard for and didn't want to ruin my chances of a personal best.

As we neared the day of the event, the freedom of 'on the day entries' meant nobody had to financially commit to the event until we were there ready to race. As such Paul dropped out after finding something more appealing to do with his day (though to be fair he would've had a long train journey in each direction). Simon and I still wanted to run and I agreed I'd run with Simon for the majority of the race, admitting I may leave him at the last minute to a final spurt to the finish.

The race went smoothly, though it was most bizarre to enter a race and not run as fast as possible! Simon ran well through course which looped several times through/around the university campus, we maintained an easy/steady pace throughout and as planned I broke away at the 4k mark. I finished well and Simon was close behind. We both managed PB's though that was inevitable having never raced a 5k before! We drove back to Coventry and treated ourselves to another Full English Breakfast.
